About Hoja

"The Hoja Project is an international charity that promotes community development in Tanzania through educational programmes serving secondary level students, out-of-school youth and the community at large in rural areas."
hoja, n. "point of issue" or "argument" in Swahili, Tanzania's national language
"Through its sponsorship of community led educational initiatives, the Hoja Project increases rural people’s access to accredited programmes, as well as other learning opportunities, and reduces the spread of HIV/AIDS by providing health education and fostering life skills development."
(Hoja's Mission Statement)
Set up in 2005 by a small group of Tanzanian, British and American friends, The Hoja Project works in the six villages of Tanga Ward, one of the poorest areas of rural Tanzania.

Our programmes are diverse, but the overarching aim is to provide people with the means to leave behind the life of deprivation and poverty into which they are born.

We believe that any community is built on the success of its young people. Without the necessary skills to earn enough money, there is little hope for someone to work themselves out of poverty.

This is why our programmes focus on providing academic or vocational education for young people, and small business loans to local villagers to help them provide for themselves.

We have also begun to develop a permaculture programme to help the local agriculture industry work more profitably and sustainably.

We're in the process of migrating all of our programme information onto this blog.  Currently, (slightly out-of-date) information on our programmes can be found at our old Hoja site.
